The goal for this Monday was rather simple, get the mechanic to remove the prop and supervise me while I would be changing the lower oil seals. I asked a few questions before doing it : are you familiar with saildrive? Do you know how to re-grease the prop? Answer: Oh! Yes no problem I can do it.
I had seen that one of the set screws was starting to strip, and so I had enquired for help from an expert. Mr. Jeff was the man, but not on this Monday morning. In fact his week-end had been rough, he felt sick and was not 100%. This led to a weak start, and we began having problem. He broke his start bit inside the stripped set screw and then had to drill it out. Once done he couldn’t unscrew the prop, until I informed him that, last time we did this we had a very big wrench…. Then with a bit more determination we were back in business! Phew….
Amateur trial to start with.
I removed the zinc splitter and the housing. When time came to pull the shaft out off the face, my inquiry was met with a blank look. He confessed that he had never seen lower seal change before, worse when I turned my attention to the prop for greasing we discovered that they didn’t have the tools for it.
By now, my patience was running low, and with a 3 hour bill for nothing, I grabbed my part and moved slowly towards home base for some help. I need a pro, I need somebody who has seen this done before…
